Cheap airfare to eastern europe?
I live in the USA, around D.C (so airports- Washington Dulles, BWI, JFK, any of those are good departure points), but all of my family is in Lithuania in Eastern Europe.
I visited them last year and in 2008 I would love to visit them again. My only problem is airfare is so expensive. Last year I paid $1,300 a person (myself, my wife, and son).
Does anybody have any tips? I know I should be flexible with dates and airports and I am. I want to departe in the summer-June or July and stay for about 4 weeks.
Anybody have a travel agent they would like to recommend or a secret website, insted of orbitz, kayak, travelocity, etc.
Would it be better for me to book in 2007 or would it be better to book 6-8 weeks prior in 2008?

They are many reliable travel agencies in DC. Just go to them instead trying to get ripped off from the on-line ones.

It’s just that June and July are two of the most expensive months to travel transatlantic. Sometimes, it’s a little cheaper if you can depart in early June.
You need to try airfare consolidators. They specialise in discounted international flights, and are often cheaper that other sources in peak season. You can check consolidators, and specials from the airlines, using — pay special attention to Mobissimo and AllCheapFares when you search with Bookingbuddy.
Also, consider going on 2 tickets: 1 to Copenhagen, for example, then separate ticket to Vilnius. Icelandair from BWI is often cheap(er) to Scandinavia into early June. You can sign up for their specials at Also, consider flying to one of these first: … then switch to LAL or Air Baltic on a separate ticket. Sometimes this is significantly cheaper.
Finally, Lufthansa has decent fares targeted to specific audiences. I don’t hear them advertised much:
